Understanding sickle cell disease

A plain-language overview of what sickle cell is, how it is inherited, and what "crisis" actually means.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited group of red blood cell disorders. In SCD, red blood cells can become hard, sticky, and C-shaped, which makes it harder for them to move through blood vessels.

This can cause episodes of pain (called a "crisis"), fatigue, and over time, damage to organs. Every warrior's experience is different - some have frequent crises, some go long stretches without one.

Important truths:
- SCD is not contagious.
- It is inherited from both parents.
- It affects people of every background, though it is more common in people of African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian descent.

SCD is a lifelong condition, but treatments and research are advancing rapidly. Knowing your body, building a care team you trust, and finding community make a real difference.
